Not only did we learn who set the fire that burned Meredith (Amanda Schull) but we also found out increasingly suspicious details regarding Mr. Montgomery’s (Chad Lowe) whereabouts the night Ali (Sasha Pieterse) disappeared. Top that off with some majorly entertaining Mona and Spencer (Troian Bellisario) scenes, and we got ourselves a great little episode of PLL.
Note: Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen Tuesday’s episode, “Mona Mania.”
That reason why Lucas (Brendan Robinson) may not be around for the middle of Season 3B is finally clear? “A” or should we say Mona has some dirt on the former photographer – he has been selling test answers to anyone who will buy them. As a result, Lucas has and is currently being blackmailed into being Mona’s “evil personal assistant.” He is really scared of Mona y’all, like really scared.
So much so that he’s considering home schooling and more importantly he set the fire we saw in the winter premiere as a trap for her. As we suspected, he also was the hoodied boy we saw Toby (Keegan Allen) run over with the SUV, though Lucas believes that it was Mona behind the wheel. Which leads us to believe or assume (never safe when it comes to PLL) that he doesn’t know about Toby’s involvement. Also, I believed him during the episode but I wonder, did you?
Paige (Lindsay Shaw) was back during “Mona Mania” as well to provide Emily (Shay Mitchell) with something to do. She’s suffering from major “A” post-traumatic stress and doesn’t understand how her girlfriend can be so strong and so crazy chasing “A” (Toby) in the woods.
Mona spent much of the episode pretending to be reformed and being a pain in Spencer’s side. After joining the Academic Decathlon team, which had an open spot thanks to “A,” she decided to run for captain against Spence.
Mona vs. Spence in a quiz off may have been some of my favorite scenes ever on PLL.
I particularly enjoyed Andrew’s (Brandon Jones) pep talk (“Put on your Hastings face and spank her tomorrow night.”) and the scenes where Mona was getting “hasting’d,” but it was easy to see that Mona would eventually win their battle of the brains.
After Mona’s public take down of Spence in the quiz off and talking to Lucas about his blackmail, Hanna (Ashley Benson) decided to take things into her own hands and confront her. She tells Mona she knows she is still “A” and, “I don’t want to see you, I don’t want to hear from you and I don’t want to know you.” Hopefully, this won’t come back to bite her in the butt, but as this is Rosewood I’m almost positive it will.
Meanwhile, the creepy meter on Byron Montgomery just rose to an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10. First there was the awkward encounter were he let Aria (Lucy Hale) and the girls know he’s on to them and stole Ali’s journal pages. Then, there was the intense and scary way he grabbed Meredith’s burnt arm as she confronted him. And finally we know, thanks to Meredith, that he DID meet up with Ali the night she went missing.
An interesting story for Byron and an even more interesting alliance between Meredith and Aria – Do we think she knows more about that night? Can she be trusted? We’ll have to wait and see.
OMG: I audibly gasped when Meredith spilled the details of Byron’s whereabouts the night of Ali’s disappearance! Mr. Montgomery – you have some explaining to do!
Thank you, TV gods.: For all the truth in this episode – multiple characters, such as Lucas spilled and gave us some major details about what “A” and Mona have been up to. It’s a welcome change from all the lies we’re used to on this show. Or at least I think they’re truths!
Awk-ward: Byron catching the girls looking through Aria’s boots and then letting her know he took the pages with his “candy hiding” story – awkward and CREEPY.
Hotness: Where’d all the boys go? This episode was severely lacking. Though, Toby was looking quite nice when he was in the kitchen helping Spence prepare for her quiz off.
Fab-u-lous: I was not feeling some of Aria’s accessories for her Vegan leather dress but absolutely adored the dress itself! It’s Free People (one of my faves) and Possessionista says it’s on sale at Shopbop!
Can. Not. Wait.: I feel like I am counting down the days until Spence finds out about Toby. It’s going to be epic and awesome and absolutely heartbreaking.
Celebuzz (1-10): 9. I enjoyed this episode a lot. It was fun, progressed multiple storylines a lot, provided real answers (or so it seems) and was very entertaining!
What did you think about “Mona Mania”? Do you think Lucas and Meredith are telling the truth? Could Byron really have killed Ali? Sound off with your theories below!
