Sarah Hyland Thinks Chris Colfer ‘Might Be an Alien’

“Of course I’m being supportive. I love her like a sister. I wouldn’t not be supportive,” declares Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland. She’s discussing the messy and often sordid events that have catapulted her TV sister Ariel Winter into the spotlight. (Last year Winter temporarily entered the care of her older sister, Shanelle Gray after she accused her mother of emotional and physical abuse. Her mother denies the charges).

The 22-year-old actress can be seen in the movie, Struck by Lightning, which is currently in theaters and available On Demand. In it,  she plays a popular cheerleader who is blackmailed by a fellow student (Glee star Chris Colferwho also wrote the movie) into contributing to his literary magazine. Colfer’s extracurricular activities, which include writing screenplays and books, make Hyland feel slightly inadequate.

“I have a theory he might be an alien,” she told Celebuzz. “He’s good at everything! He makes me feel lazy. I feel like I’ve done nothing with my life at all.”

This coming from someone who has been in showbiz nearly two decades. The New York native, who got her start in commercials at the age of four, made her film debut as shock jock and America’s Got Talent judge Howard Stern’s daughter in Private Parts, sang on Broadway and played Brooke Shields’ daughter on NBC’s short lived Lipstick Jungle.

“I just knew that was what I wanted to do,” she says. “I forced my parents to let me do it and the rest is online!”

On Modern Family and Struck by Lightning, Hyland plays a popular girl. With her gorgeous looks, high school must have been pretty easy in real life too.

“I won’t say I wasn’t in the popular crowd,” she admits. “But I won’t say I didn’t have trouble in high school. I went to a performing arts school. I definitely wasn’t picked on, but there was the drama that comes along with high school. Boyfriends and all that stuff.”

And let’s not forget the added drama that comes with the entire student body being budding thespians. “Everyone’s always dramatic when they’re actors. I was pretty dramatic as well,” she exclaimed.

Hyland also made news last year when she revealed that since the age of nine she suffered from muti cystic dysplastic kidney and underwent a transplant with a kidney donated from her father.

“My health is good now and it’s really nice hearing other people’s stories. I was in Disneyland over Thanksgiving and a little girl came up to me for an autograph. Out of nowhere, she told me she had a kidney transplant. It was amazing to meet her.”

Starring on one of TV’s most popular and beloved sitcoms is still a heady experience for Hyland. “It’s really amazing being a part of this show. People treat it like a phenomenon. It’s been compared to Friends, and Will & Grace, and those are the kind of shows I watched when I was growing up so it’s such an honor. It definitely doesn’t come around very often.”

She also doesn’t seem to have much in common with boy-crazy rebellious Haley. “I’m kind of weird,” she says laughingly.

“I do weird, nerdy things. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, like a fanatic almost. I’ve seen every movie and read each book at least three times. I grew up with Harry Potter. I read the first book when I was nine years old. Then, the movie came out a week before my eleventh birthday so I kind of grew up with him. I’m the same age as the characters.”

One last thing, has she bought anything for recently engaged co-stars Sofia Vergara?

“No, what do you give the woman who has everything. Also, people can be engaged for years so I don’t know when the wedding will happen. When I find out a date I’ll start thinking about it.”

Struck by Lightning is in theatres and available On Demand. And Modern Family airs Wednesdays at 9PM on ABC.
