'Nashville' Recap: Deacon Flips Out and Faces His Demons (VIDEO)
Rayna and her ex hash out their past on the ABC drama's latest episode, 'You Win Again.'
A week later and the drama was back in Nashville. After the multi-million-download success of Juliette and Rayna’s duet, “Wrong Song,” the headbutting co-headliners returned home for an industry party. You can bet that everyone wanted a piece of these two while they were in town.
Teddy (Eric Close) may have won the mayoral race but as he mentioned this week, while everyone else is trying to win Rayna over, he is just trying to win her back. Every time a little life is breathed back into the marriage, something else is sucking the life out of it. This week it was Rayna’s guitarist Liam McGuinnis (Michiel Hulsman).
Liam and Rayna were grinding a little too closely at their show and he was making some nasty jabs about her marriage. Liam isn’t the first guy who has captured Rayna’s attention. We all know that spot belongs to Deacon. Despite every argument and breakup, these two always come back to each other in some way.
Liam also two-timed Rayna in trying to get her to Countless Records. Ming Na guest starred as a persuasive record exec named Calista who wants to woo Rayna away. While she didn’t offer Rayna enough to want to walk away from Edgehill, she did say something that resonated as a theme for this entire show: “I know how hard leaving is, but it doesn’t make staying right.”Watch it again above. Rayna loved Deacon, but left so he could get his life together. Then, again, he always holds a piece of her and now it’s Teddy who she isn’t sure she belongs with.
There is this large part of me that wants to root for Rayna and Deacon, but another part of me that likes Deacon with Juliette. Juliette is pushing him towards better choices now. Deacon was back, front and center, this week dealing with his demons. He might be helping Juliette’s mother in her battle with sobriety but sometimes he forgets to deal with his own issues.
Juliette may have shown up to his house to bitch him out, but in the end she offered him the advice to find the strength he needed. Now, Deacon’s rejoining the tour and it’s good to see him back -- even if it’s to work with the other leading lady. He also inspires Juliette to be a better singer and daughter. I gotta say, I approve.
Avery (Jonathan Jackson) has gotten so full of himself and was gunning for Juliette’s attention this week. It’s all karma when it comes to this boy. Scarlett (Clare Bowen) and Gunnar (Sam Palladio) are joining forces with Avery’s old band to ensure that the good guys win. Loyalty is something that should be rewarded and they are setting out to prove that nice guys don’t always have to finish last.
If this new collaboration is going to work, Gunnar needs to quit taking his pissy moods out on Scarlett. She already has a crappy ex and doesn’t deserve to have someone else’s personal crap taken out on her.
OMG: Juliette’s bonding moment with her mother. Let the tears flow.
Thank you, TV Gods: Deacon is back! I was so happy when he walked onto that tarmac.
Awk-ward: All of Liam’s insinuations about Rayna’s crappy marriage.
Hotness: Juliette’s gold fringy dress from the tour. They give that girl some great outfits!
Fabu-lous: Gunnar and Scarlett’s fight for the good guys to win.
Can.Not.Wait: Rayna, Juliette, and Deacon on tour together.
Celebuzz Meter (1-10): 8. No jaw-dropping moments but a lot of honesty and rawness. I felt like we discovered a lot this week and it’s also so great to see Deacon back on the road.
What do you think will happen now that Deacon’s on tour? Is Teddy and Rayna’s marriage doomed? Will Scarlett and Gunnar’s collaboration with Avery’s band pan out?
