That said, new-release films are more than holding their own with moviegoers, thanks to effective counterprogramming, not to mention the unexpected surprise that some of them are actually pretty good.

But January 25 brings not one, not two, but three new movies whose quality their distributors were either over- or underconfident enough about that they elected not to show them to the press prior to opening day.
