Disney Makes J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Wars’ Official
After days of rumors and announcements, the big bosses issue official statements on the franchise’s new director.
As Star Wars fans around the world continue to bask in the news that J.J. Abrams will direct Episode VII, Disney made everything official on Friday night.
“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy announced in a statement posted on the franchise’s website.
“J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”
Creator George Lucas also announced his approval: “I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”
Michael Arndt, the brains behind screenplays for Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3 and the upcoming Hunger Games installment, Catching Fire, will pen Star Wars: Episode VII, slated for a 2015 release.
On Friday, Abrams also released his own statement regarding Luke Skywalker and Lucas’ beloved characters and world.
“To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor . . . I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.”
Abrams is currently putting on the finishing touches to his next big project: Star Trek: Into Darkness, the highly anticipated follow up to 2009’s Star Trek.
