'Pretty Little Liars' Recap: Spencer Reveals Her Cracks At Radley
The ABC Family show also gives Hanna a major shock as an Olympian visits town.
Being Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario) is a tough job on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars.
While “A” has definitely picked favorites over the course of the show’s run – like Emily (Shay Mitchell) last season – “she” has seemingly broken down the strongest Liar to bits. Has the “A” team made Spencer crazy? Right now, the jury still seems to be out on that one as fellow Liar Hanna (Ashley Benson) deals with a problem she thought was in the past and Aria (Lucy Hale) attempts to help Ezra (Ian Harding).
After Spencer was found wandering aimlessly in the woods following the discovery of Toby’s (Keegan Allen) possible dead body, park rangers sent her to Radley Sanitarium for a 3-day psych evaluation. Wanting to take a break from her overwhelming life, Spence decided to play it cool and not tell anyone who she was.
That is until Dr. Sullivan (Annabeth Gish) showed up to work with her. Deciding to make her time in Radley productive, Spencer befriends the orderly E. Lamb, whose badge Toby stole to get into the facility.
She begins asking questions about how he lost his badge and is rather forthcoming with Lamb about Toby and Mona’s (Janel Parrish) antics. Lamb says he once knew a boy named Toby, calling him a nice kid who he met when his mother was in Radley. And it seems his Toby and hers may be one and the same.
It’s questionable as to whether Spence has really gone crazy but as the episode draws to a close, she admits that while wandering around in the woods, she was ready for it to all end. “How do you keep going when the worst thing has happened? What do you have to change inside to survive? Who do you have to become?” she wonders.
Speaking to her therapy group but seeing her friends, she says, “You don’t know who I am anymore, and you can’t count on me.” Uh-oh.
Meanwhile, her friends are embroiled in their own dramas on the episode.
Aria spent the episode making her relationship with Ezra a secret again in an effort to get him a substitute-teaching job at Rosewood High. Byron’s (Chad Lowe) plan for he and Ella (Holly Marie Combs) to provide stability for the former teacher’s new life in hopes he’ll break it off with Aria may just be working.
And Emily was able to chat swimming with five-time Olympic medalist Missy Franklin who Shana (Aeriel Miranda) says she met when in the airport in Colorado.
OMG: Wilden’s back! Does this mean Toby’s really dead? I hope not!
Thank you, TV gods.: For Bellisario’s talent! This storyline has definitely shown some of the actress’ best work on the series to date. If PLL could get an Emmy, it should be for her performance.
Awk-ward: Franklin appearing on the show was great, but was there really a point to it? And really, how did Shana get her all the way to Rosewood based on a plane ride together?
Hotness: Can you believe it? Not one hot moment the whole episode!
Fab-u-lous: I absolutely adore Rebecca Minkoff bags and it seems PLL costume designer Mandi Line does, as well. Almost every episode this season, the girls seem to have something Minkoff and this episode Hanna was rocking the stylish "Paramour" satchel. Unfortunately, it looks like the bag is no longer available on Minkoff’s site.
Can. Not. Wait.: Only two episodes left until the finale and I can’t wait! What will go down when the Liars engage in “A dangerous game” with “A.” We know at least the girl in the red jacket will be revealed!
Celebuzz (1-10): 7. The tension and drama is building as PLL makes it’s way to the end of Season 3. While this was a great episode, mostly for Bellisario, it was a bit lackluster in terms of action.
