Lilo’s Lawyer Is Under Investigation
On the heels of her striking an 11th-hour plea deal in her car-crash case, Lohan’s lawyer, Mark Heller, has come under fire amid allegations that he tried to convince the actress’ former assistant, Gavin Doyle, to lie under oath.
The Santa Monica City Attorney’s office will be opening an investigation into the witness tampering claims, according to TMZ. Heller has been accused of trying to coerce Doyle into taking the stand in court to say that he was on the one behind the wheel of Lohan’s Porsche when it crashed into the dump truck on the Pacific Coast Highway last summer, the accident at the heart of the three misdemeanor charges that Lohan faced in the Los Angeles, Calif., courthouse on Monday.
Though Heller has adamantly denied the declarations, the actress’ father, Michael Lohan, believes the attorney should be striped of his right to practice law.
“This guy hasn’t told my daughter today anything that was going on, any of the negotiations. He lied to her,” Michael told press after chasing Heller away from the courthouse following the Monday morning hearing, during which his daughter agreed to 90 days in a locked-down residential rehabilitation facility, 30 days of community labor, and 18 months of psychotherapy. “He told her everything will be fine. She reflected that to me over the last couple of days. She had no idea what was happening behind the closed doors.”
Until last month, Lohan was represented by her longtime lawyer Shawn Holley, among the region’s top lawyers. Heller, her new attorney, had previously been reprimanded by Judge James Dabney, who doubted the attorney’s ability to adequately defend the actress in California, given that he only has a license to practice law in the state of New York. During the Monday hearing, Heller was aided by Anthony Falangetti, who advised him on California law and helped strike a plea deal with the prosecutors.
