‘G.I. Joe’ Sequel Tops Weekend Box Office With $41M
His latest action film, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, grossed $41.2 million over the Easter holiday, bringing its four-day total to $51.7 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Gerard Butler’s Olympus Has Fallen and Oz the Great and Powerfulrounded out the top five.
According to THR, the G.I. Joe sequel, directed by Jon M. Chu, also enjoyed massive success outside of North America, grossing some $80.3 million. The film, also starring Dwayne Johnson and Friday Night Lights’ Adrianne Palicki, is on pace to make more than 2009’s G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra.
The other newcomer of the week, The Host, opened with a disappointing $11 million, despite distribution to some 3,200 theaters. (For comparison, Temptation played in 2,047 theaters, while G.I. Joe played in some 3,700).
