The movie is based on the autobiography of Chris Kyle, "American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History."

Steven Spielberg is teaming up with Bradley Cooper to tell the story of Chris Kyle, who holds the title of most lethal sniper in American military history. In addition to playing the title role, Cooper is also producing the movie. The film is expected to come out sometime in the first quarter of next year.

Chris Kyle's book, which spent 18 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, tells his life story from growing up in Texas to serving in the Iraq war. It was in Iraq that Kyle claims to have killed 255 people, most by sniper attack. He was shot and killed earlier this year at a Texas gun range by a fellow veteran who was reportedly suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

American Sniper will be Spielberg's first film since Lincoln, which was nominated for 12 Academy Awards. Spielberg was set to direct Robopocalypse, about a post-apocalyptic world following a robot uprising, but the project has been put on indefinite hold.

This latest film will round out Spielberg's war trilogy spanning the Civil War (Lincoln), World War II (Schindler's List) and now Iraq. Fictional wars the The War of the Worlds don't count.
