Barbara Walters to Retire in 2014

Barbara Walters will officially retire in summer 2014, the legendary television journalist confirmed to ABC News late Sunday evening.

"I am very happy with my decision and look forward to a wonderful and special year ahead both on The View and with ABC News. I created The View and am delighted it will last beyond my leaving it," she said.

She is expected to elaborate on her decision on Monday's episode of The View.

Between now and May, Walters will continue to appear on The View and report for ABC News. She also has plans to host an Oscars special, as well as a career retrospective in May.

Walters has been with ABC News for 37 years. Her career began in 1961 at NBC's Today, where she would eventually become the first female to co-anchor a morning network news program.
