Jason Collins Marches in the Boston Pride Parade
Fulfilling a promise he made when he came out publicly in the pages of Sports Illustrated last month, Jason Collins marched in Boston’s Pride Parade Saturday. Collins was joined by his former college roommate and current Massachusetts congressman Joe Kennedy for the event.
Collins, who wore a Nike shirt with the words “#BETRUE” in rainbow lettering, said a “huge weight has been lifted” after coming out. Collins became the first openly gay active player in a major American team sport when he came out in May. Soccer player Robbie Rogers, who is also openly gay, had retired from the sport and had only played in Britain when he came out. However, he has, since then, come out of retirement to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy, David Beckham’s former team.
