Weekend Box Office: ‘The Purge’ Scares Away the Competition
It was a great weekend for thrill-seekers, as the small budget The Purge made back its budget and then some to take the weekend box office’s top spot. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Purge, starring Ethan Hawke, took in $36.4 million against its $3 million budget.
The Purge wasn’t Universal’s only success this weekend, as Fast & Furious 6 took in another $19.8 million, putting it in second for weekend gross.
This weekend’s big disappointment comes by way of The Internship which made a meager $18.1 million, putting it in fourth place, behind Now You See Me. The Google commercial “comedy” is director Shawn Levy‘s worst opening in a decade and will certainly do nothing for the careers of stars Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. However, audiences were much kinder to the movie than critics as it holds a CinemaScore rating of B+ versus a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Epic rounds out the top five, taking in $12.1 million this weekend.
Up next weekend: This is the End, The Bling Ring and Man of Steel.
