First Major 'Star Wars' Rumor Suggests J.J. Abrams May Center New Movie Around Teen Twins
Now, who are those 17-year-olds twins, exactly? Star Wars nerds should have no problem with this one: the twins are Jacen and Jaina Solo and their story is ripped directly from the Star Wars novel and comics. Jacen and Jaina are the twin children of Han Solo and Princess Leia. They have one brother, Anakin. Not, that Anakin, the one who grows up to be Darth Vader, but a different Anakin. Again, according to Ruggirello's source, the film's storyline will focus on "two 17 year old twins, a girl and a boy, [who] are trained by their uncle Luke to be the greatest Jedis in the galaxy. Problems arise when the male twin turns to the dark side." And, yes, of course, "uncle Luke" refers to Luke Skywalker. In the current Star Wars universe, Jacen Solo turns into Darth Caedus, who is ultimately killed by his twin sister Jaina. If you're keeping a timeline, that would place the new film after both the original Star Wars films and their prequels: a true sequel.
If Abrams does, indeed, plan to make this plotline the main focus of his first Star Wars film, it represents an interesting choice. First of all, Abrams has chosen a story from the existing Star Wars canon, a move that is sure to please fans. Second, Abrams has chosen to use two teens as the film's lead, trendy idea currently, what with the success of Harry Potter and Twilight and Hunger Games and Beautiful Creatures. Making the new Star Wars as close as possible to Y.A. fiction is a sure way to put some (teen) butts in seats. There's no chance Star Wars won't be a success, but it's always good to get some new fans. Fans whose parents were teenagers when the original Star Wars came out.
As for who should play the teen leads, it's anybody's guess at this point. But anyone who suggests Jaden and Willow Smith is automatically disqualified from the guessing game.
The movie is supposed to come out in 2015 and Abrams recently announced that production is set to begin in London in early 2014. So whatever the story is going to be, we'll surely get some concrete details soon enough.
