Bullock is returning to the negotiating table after discussions with Sony fell through in March. If cast, she would play the kooky, drunken, mean-spirited woman who runs the orphanage where Annie and her friends live (or, where they sing that annoyingly catchy song, “Hard Knock Life”). It’s the same role that Carol Burnett redefined in the 1982 movie. (Watch her take on “Little Girls” here.)
Cutie Quevenzhane Wallis (Oscar-nominated this year for Beasts of the Southern Wild) has already been cast as the musical’s titular character. She’ll be joined by Jamie Foxx, of all people, who will play her bald caretaker, Daddy Warbucks.
Will Gluck (Easy A; Friends With Benefits) is directing the project, with Will Smith and Jay-Z serving as producers.
Annie is currently playing on Broadway, with Jane Lynch playing Bullock’s would-be role. You can watch her take on more of those annoyingly catchy songs from Sunday’s Tony Awards, below.
