Cobie Smulders Joins the Cast of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’

Cobie Smulders will be reprising her role from The Avengers this fall on ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Due to her contract with How I Met Your Mother, Smulders won’t be appearing in every episode, but she’ll pop up sporadically, including in the show’s pilot episode, set to air Sept. 24.

I wanted very much to have Cobie in the pilot because as much as anyone else, she IS SHIELD,” writer-director Joss Whedon told Entertainment Weekly in a statement. “She’s cool and commanding, and has the dry humor that plays so well with Clark [Gregg]’s. Also, if she’s in it I get to hang out with Cobie.”

Smulders joined the Marvel universe in The Avengers as Agent Maria Hill opposite Clark Gregg’s Agent Phil Coulson. Gregg’s Coulson, who died in The Avengers, will be resurrected to star in S.H.I.E.L.D., alongside Marvel universe newcomers J. August Richards, Ming-Na Wen and Iain de Caestecker. Gregg has teased that the show would feature some “surprising villains and surprising superheroes,” but don’t hold your breath for Iron Man’s small screen debut.

In other Marvel news, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.had a panel Friday at Comic-Con and rather than just show clips, Whedon showed the entire pilot episode. It’s getting great reviews from mega-fans.
