Comic-Con 2013: ‘Walking Dead’ Premiere Date Revealed, Debuts Season 4 Trailer

Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne on AMC’s The Walking Dead, thinks you should “expect the unexpected” on the addictive cable drama’s upcoming fourth season, which premieres October 13.

After an intense third season finale, Walking Dead executive producer Robert Kirkman promised fans on Friday at the show’s Comic-Con panel that “things are going to get crazier.”

“It has escalated,” added showrunner Scott Gimple. “We did the first episode [of Season 4]. I wrote it and Greg [Nicotero] directed it. Right out of the gate the things that we did blew my mind. It’s going to get insane very quickly.”

The Comic-Con audience also got the exclusive first peek at the new season in a 4-minute long trailer that is beyond epic. The number of walkers crowding in on our group’s homebase is growing immensely while there also appears to be danger within the prison walls as well. We’d tell you more but you can watch it for yourself above.

Panelists on the Hall H stage included Gurira (Michonne), Andrew Lincoln (Rick), Norman Reedus (Daryl), Steven Yeun (Glenn), Lauren Cohan (Maggie), Scott Wilson (Hershel), David Morrissey (The Governor), Chad L. Coleman (Tyreese) in addition to Kirkman, Gimple and executive producer Gale Anne Herd.

Lincoln revealed that Season 4 will see Rick returning to good form and attempting to be a good parent again while showcasing his relationship with his son.

“I think the relationship with Carl is integral to the beginning of the season,” he explained. “[Carl] turning into a sociopath at the end of the last season woke him up to his parenting duties.”

Of the fourth season, Lincoln also said, “When we meet them all in Season 4, there’s a whole new community which has an incredible friction and tension between certain characters and it makes for incredible character-driven scenes.”

Reedus also spoke about the death of his character’s brother, Merle, while Gurira talked about the hope she thinks these characters can still have in their hopeless world.

The fourth season of The Walking Dead premieres October 13 at 9 PM on AMC.
