Kelly Ripa on Jenny McCarthy Joining 'The View': 'She's Going to Excel'

Ever since The View announced Jenny McCarthy would join the hosting panel amid its shake-up, the ABC morning show has fought flak for what many have called a controversial choice. But talk show veteran Kelly Ripa, co-host of Live! with Kelly and Michael, thinks McCarthy has what it takes to win over audiences across America.

"I love Jenny. We used to work together on as sitcom, Hope & Faith," Ripa told Celebuzz, while promoting the Electrolux French Door Refrigerator and launching the Electrolux Perfect Temp Sweepstakes. "She is one of the funniest people I have ever met [and] one of the smartest people I have ever met."

"She is a brilliant storyteller," she continued. "I think when you host a chat show, one of the things you have to be good at is weaving a story together in an efficient way, and she's got that in spades. So ... she doesn't need my advice. She knows what she's doing. I think she's going to excel there."

McCarthy, a comedic actress, onetime Playboy model and host of an MTV dating show, steps on to The View stage as two long-time co-hosts bid adieu: Elisabeth Hasselbeck just left for Fox & Friends, and Joy Behar will step down later this summer. So even with McCarthy coming to the chatfest Sept. 9, another seat still needs to be filled.

"Maybe take somebody people don't know very well," Ripa posited, reminding that "a lot of people didn't know me very well" when she first became Regis Philbin's Live! co-host in 2001 following Kathie Lee Gifford's departure. "It's a chemistry thing. It takes a person who is able to sort of weave together relatable stories to our audience. That's the person you need to look for."

"So maybe it's not somebody that's so well known," she continued. "Maybe they haven't found her yet. Would it be a guy? Who knows. You never know."
