Fox has announced Glee will address drug addiction in its planned tribute episode for Cory Monteith.
Following an extended hiatus from the small screen, the Fox musical-comedy will return for its fifth season on Sept. 26, airing for the first time since former cast member Monteith, 31, was found dead on July 13 from a toxic mixture of heroin and alcohol .
The third episode of the season, slated to air on Oct. 10, will tackle the trouble past that plagued Monteith, who played Finn Husdon on the hit series.
“That is the episode where Cory’s character will be written off,” Fox’s entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly confirmed Thursday. “[It] will deal directly with drug addiction and with the circumstances surrounding Cory’s death.”
The Fox executive also announced that Glee creator Ryan Murphy will shoot PSAs — which will run throughout the tribute episode — with the cast, speaking directly to the audience about the incident and addiction. Furthermore, any proceeds from the music featured in the episode will go directly to setting up a fund in Monteith’s name.
The Glee star will also be remembered days before the new season begins at this year’s Emmys. The show’s executive producer confirmed plans are taking shape for “something that reflects an homage” to Monteith during the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, airing Sept. 22.
