Tom Hanks Bonds With His Captors in the New 'Captain Phillips' Trailer

The first trailer for Somali pirate extravaganza Captain Phillips stuck mostly to what's probably only the first 30-or-so minutes of the movie. With this new trailer, we get to see what else the movie has in store, besides the pirates boarding the Maersk Alabama. And that is: Tom Hanks will get taken off the cargo ship and onto another, smaller ship as a hostage where he'll have some bonding time and Oscar Moments™ with his captors. Also, Catherine Keener will be in this. Blink and you'll miss her, but do not forget that Catherine Keener is in this trailer.

The movie is directed by Paul Greengrass and based on the real Richard Phillips' book A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea, which chronicles the true story of his cargo ship being boarded by Somali pirates in April 2009. Since the audience will go into the movie knowing the ending (he lives), it's up to Greengrass and Hanks to make us interested in how it all plays out. From this trailer, it looks like the pirates and Captain Phillips will forge something of a barge, making it a little more layered than simply a rescue-at-sea movie.

Captain Phillips will get its world premiere as the opening night film at the New York Film Festival on September 27. It will be released in theaters on October 11.
