‘Pretty Little Liars’ Recap: Red Coats and Hoedowns
World War “A” is coming and the girls on ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars better get ready.
But before they embark on the big showdown with their nemesis set for the upcoming Season 4 finale, the Liars put on their cowboy boots and donned their best western apparel at the hoedown school dance, where it appears the infamous Red Coat was partying with them.
Note: Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen Tuesday’s episode, “Bring Down the Hoe.”
To the surprise of no one, Red Coat’s real identity was revealed to be Cece Drake (Vanessa Ray) … or so we think. Shortly before Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Emily (Shay Mitchell) found a red coat outside the dance, the blonde friend of Ali’s (Sasha Pieterse) appeared in some kind of “A” lair, complete with a red coat and tons of photographs of the Liars. The girls also found one of her coat’s buttons in the crawl space under the DiLaurentis house.
So while the girls attempt to figure out what could make her hate them so bad, she spent the episode having ominious telephone calls and eavesdropping on Ezra (Ian Harding) and Aria’s (Lucy Hale) sure-to-be interesting conversation.
And those two crazy kids, what are we going to do with them, eh?
After last week’s jaw-dropping reveal that Malcolm is not actually Ezra’s son, the English teacher is feeling down and out and attempting to reconnect with his former lady love. Pesky Aria spends most of the episode dodging his phone calls and running into him while with new beau, Jake (Ryan Guzman). However, after hearing from Em that Malcolm is being taken away from her ex, she heads to his apartment to hear him out. What will he tell her? Could Ezria be getting back together sooner than we thought? The finale should provide us with these answers, hopefully.
At the same time, Spencer spent much of “Bring Down the Hoe” trying to convince Toby (Keegan Allen) that “A” was trying to set him up by plying him with information regarding his mother’s possible murder. The set up would have worked had it not been for the appearance of Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) at the request of Spencer.
As the main mystery of this portion of the fourth season has been who killed Wilden, I have to wonder whether or not next week’s finale will provide us with the answer. Well, fans got one step closer to the truth as Travis, a random Rosewood High student, came forward to Hanna (Ashley Benson) with information about how the police officer died. Apparently, he heard gun shots AFTER he saw Ms. Marin leave the lake and “A” has attempted to pay him off. Will his confession to the police clear her mother’s name?
We’ll have to wait until next week to find out!
OMG: Surprisingly, there were no standout or gasp worthy moments this episode! Of course, Red Coat now has a face… but isn’t that who we all suspected it was from the beginning?
Thank you, TV gods.: For some good ol’ line dancing by Aria and Jake!!
Awk-ward: Jake and Ezra’s meeting at the brew and then conversation later at the dance were oozing with awkwardness. Skin crawling awkwardness.
Hotness: Jake’s smile is so sweet. Too bad, I’m assuming, we probably won’t be seeing it for too much longer.
Fab-u-lous: A country hoe-down means tons of cowboy boots and cute outfits. My favorite hoe-down looks of the episode were Emily’s and Hanna’s, especially Em’s fringe boots. Head to wornontv.net for a complete rundown of where you can get both girls’ looks.
Can. Not. Wait.: #worldwarA. Bring it.
Celebuzz (1-10): 8. The penultimate episode to a PLL finale is usually full of a little more action than this episode gave us and while there were some small developments (Hello again, Cece!), I wanted more foreshadowing of what to expect next week.
