Jimmy Iovine Leaving ‘American Idol'; Randy Jackson Likely to Mentor Contestants, Instead
Jimmy Iovine, the cranky, hat-wearing record producer who acted like a second-rate replacement for Simon Cowell, is exiting American Idol after three seasons worth of mentoring the show’s contestants, Deadlinereported late Wednesday. He’s expected to be replaced by Randy Jackson, who left the judges’ table earlier this year.
It’s the latest shake-up for the top-rated FOX program, which is trying to fix problems created by last season’s disastrous judges’ lineup. So far, Keith Urban has been confirmed to return to the table. Former judge Jennifer Lopez is also expected to announce her return next week, while producer DJ Luke is said to be eyeing the third and final spot.
Host Ryan Seacrest, meanwhile, will be back no matter what happens. Hooray?
