Matthew McConaughey Battles HIV in First 'Dallas Buyers Club' Trailer
Dallas Buyers Club tells the based-on-a-true-story story of Ron Woodroof who, after being infected with HIV, begins to smuggle in drugs in order to help those, like himself, who desperately need them.
It looks to be McConaughey's most realistic shot at an Oscar nomination yet. It will be making its premiere at Toronto Film Festival and Focus Features just announced it's pushing the release date for Dallas Buyers Club up nearly a month to Nov. 1, both good signs for the movie. There is also Oscar buzz for Leto, playing Rayon, a trans person who is also HIV+ and helps Woodroof to set up the Dallas Buyers Club.
Both Leto and McConaughey subjected themselves to extreme weight loss in order to play their roles. McConaughey has, for several years, tried to distance himself from the rom coms of his past, playing more interesting, layered characters, most recently in well-received roles in Magic Mike and Mud, though he's yet to get that coveted Oscar nomination. Could 2013 be his year?
