Buckingham Palace had a case of the whoops this week, when the police confronted who they thought was an intruder in the gardens.

The “intruder” turned out to be the Duke of York, aka. Prince Andrew, who was just taking a walk around the palace grounds on Wednesday evening.

On Sunday, London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed that an apology had been sent to the Duke, who is the second son of Queen Elizabeth II and the ex husband of Sarah Ferguson.

The good Duke responded with a statement that included the following message:

The police have a difficult job to do balancing security for the Royal Family and deterring intruders, and sometimes they get it wrong. I am grateful for their apology and look forward to a safe walk in the garden in the future.” [via the Daily Mail]
The mix-up occurred just two days after an actual intruder and his accomplice were arrested on suspicion of burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary. On the evening of Sept. 2, an intruder reportedly scaled a fence and reached the inside of Buckingham Palace before being confronted by authorities.
