'The Railway Man' Trailer: Colin Firth Confronts His World War II Demons
Firth plays a former World War II PoW who, with help from his wife (Kidman) and best friend (Stellan Skarsgard), confronts his former torturer.
The film just premiered to somewhat mixed reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival. While The Guardian's Catherine Shoard praised Firth's "performance of immense emotional complexity," The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney called it "plodding" and "poorly-structured." As with many films premiering at film festivals, The Railway Man doesn't yet have a U.S. distributor and, therefore, there's no word on a release date.
However, given the film's stars and its grim subject, expect some studio to gobble this up as an Oscar hopeful. However it remains to be seen if Firth will be as successful playing someone who fought in World War II as he was playing someone who gave a speech about it.
