‘Breaking Bad’ Spinoff ‘Better Call Saul’ Is a Go

AMC and Sony have reportedly reached an agreement, and it looks like the rumored Breaking Bad spinoff based on Saul Goodman will come to fruition.

The series, which will also air on AMC, would be called Better Call Saul, after the character’s famously cheesy television commercials. It’s being described as a prequel, focusing on the character of Saul before he became Walter White’s lawyer.  Saul is often used as comedic relief on Breaking Bad and the hourlong spinoff is expected to be far less dark.

Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan has been talking about a Saul spinoff for quite some time now, saying last year: “I would love to see a Saul Goodman spinoff. I can’t say that it is genuinely in the works at this moment, but certainly Bob Odenkirk and I have talked about it a little bit.”

A licensing agreement doesn’t necessarily guarantee Better Call Saul will ever see the light of day. But Deadline sources say the show has a full series order “pending the complication of Sony TV’s deals with Gilligan, Gould and Odenkirk.” Those TV deals would, ostensibly, be complete once Breaking Bad ends at the end of this month.
