‘Gravity’ Breaks Box Office Records with $55.6M Weekend Gross
As expected, Gravity
won top honors at the box office this weekend -- and in record-breaking fashion.
Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D spectacle grossed an estimated $55.6 million in domestic ticket sales, making it the best October opening of all time, according to Deadline.
The weekend performance is also the best three-day showing for George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, who play astronauts who become lost in space after their shuttle breaks.
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 and Runner Runner grossed $21.5 million and $7.9 million, respectively, to round out the top three.
On deck for next week: Tom Hanks’ Captain Phillips, the star-studded Machete Kills and the new film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, starring Hailee Steinfeld.
