Mischa Barton Opens Up About Her “Full-On Breakdown”
Years after she became better known for her bad behavior than for her acting career, Mischa Barton is talking about the “full-on breakdown” that landed her on 5150 hold at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Barton tells People that she’s adopted a “work hard play hard” attitude after the success of The O.C. It’s the first time she’s spoken about her involuntary hospitalization since it happened in 2009. Barton says that she’d clacked out after taking a sedative and was placed on a 5150 hold after she threatened to kill herself. “It was a full-on breakdown,” Barton tells People. “I was under enormous pressure.” Barton had previously blamed the hold on a fear of needles.
Barton also talks about her weight, and her struggles with tabloid criticism: “It was always, ‘She’s too skinny, she must be sick.’ Then it was, ‘She’s too big.’ I was never the right weight.” However, she says she’s much healthier these days: “I’ve learned a lot. I’m stronger now.”
