John Oliver Is Leaving ‘The Daily Show’ to Host His Own Show on HBO

HBO has announced that John Oliver will be hosting a new, weekly talk show on the network to start in 2014. The show, which will air on Sunday nights, is described as a topical comedy series.

This seems expected, given how well Oliver did while guest hosting The Daily Show for Jon Stewart over the summer. However HBO’s president of programming Michael Lombardo says in the news release that the network “[wasn’t] otherwise searching for another weekly talk show.” Apparently they were quite impressed with Oliver. Oliver himself thanked Comedy Central and singled out Stewart.

I’m incredibly excited to be joining HBO, especially as I presume this means I get free HBO now. I want to thank Comedy Central, and everyone at The Daily Show for the best seven and a half years of my life. But most of all, I’d like to thank Jon Stewart. He taught me everything I know. In fact, if I fail in the future, it’s entirely his fault.

Best of luck, John!
