Ben Whishaw Replaces Sacha Baron Cohen in the Freddie Mercury Biopic
After losing Sacha Baron Cohen, the producers of the planned Freddie Mercury biopic have found a new man to play the Queen frontman: Ben Whishaw. Deadline reports that Whishaw, who has previously starred in Skyfall, Cloud Atlas and I’m Not There, will take on the role of Freddie Mercury; the film will be directed by Dexter Fletcher.
Before dropping out this summer, Cohen had been attached to the film for three years. At the time, it was reported that Cohen and the surviving members of Queen had disagreed about how much of Mercury’s personal struggles the film should show. However, Queen guitarist Brian May has since countered that Cohen’s personality was too big for the role.
Queen is working closely with the filmmakers on the Mercury biopic. They’ve already secured the right to use Queen classics “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Will Rock You” and “Another One Bites the Dust” in the movie.
