Marvel Confirms Paul Rudd Will Play Ant-Man
It's been rumored for some time now, but Marvel has now confirmed
that Paul Rudd
will play the superhero Ant-Man in a movie set to come out July 31, 2015. "When [director] Edgar Wright
came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star," Marvel's Kevin Feige
said. "We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life."
The decision to make a stand-alone Ant-Man film strikes me as a bit odd, seeing as the character is one of the less famous in the Marvel canon. And Rudd by himself isn't really a proven box office draw, most of his leading roles, like I Love You, Man, have been co-leads and they've certainly not all been successful, see: Wanderlust. Regardless, this seems like excellent news and I'll refrain any judgements until the film starts shooting at least.
In addition to Rudd, Joseph Gordon-Levitt had also been rumored for the role.
