Are You Ready for Congressman Clay Aiken?
Having had his fill of the most dangerous game and collecting Fabergé eggs, Clay Aiken is looking to move onto another favorite hobby of the rich and idle, a vanity congressional run. The Washington Blade’s Chris Johnson reports that Aiken is “actively considering” a run for a house seat in North Carolina’s second congressional district. Aiken, a Raleigh native, has reportedly made “phone calls to gauge support,” commissioned polling and met with several “political operatives” including Betsy Conti. The report does not specify when Aiken plans to formally announce his congressional bid.
And, as it turns out, Clay’s run at political office is true. A source close to the American Idol alum tells CB! Aiken has expressed some interest in public office as of late.
The North Carolina 2nd is currently represented by Republican Renee Ellmers. It is, however, a typically Democratic district, encompassing the state capital of Raleigh, as well as all or parts of seven other North Carolina counties.
If Aiken were to win, he’d certainly not be the first person to make a jump from the entertainment industry into politics. He wouldn’t even be the first former reality star in Congress, just ask former Real World star and current tea partier Sean Duffy.
