Leonardo DiCaprio has certainly experienced his fair share of swimming with sharks in the deep end of Hollywood throughout his career, but nothing could have prepared him for this.
The Oscar-nominated actor sat down with Ellen DeGeneres for an episode of the comedienne’s talk show airing Jan. 7 to chat about his non-profit, LDF, which protects endangered species and their eco-systems. But on one adventure the only one who needed protection was Leo himself.
“I went scuba diving looking for sharks and I had a huge fear of sharks and when I did Blood Diamond in 2006 I actually got stuck in a cage with a great white, which was awesome,” he told Ellen.
“It was a gigantic great white. It was in the cage with me… They actually said in 30 years this is has never happened,” Leo added. “But the tuna kind of got stuck in the top of the cage and the great white kept on and tried to bite it and went into the cage with me and half of it’s body was in and out and I flattened down at the bottom and it was this far away and it chomped a few times, but I survived it…
“It was absolutely terrifying.”
