Former Downton Abbey actor Dan Stevens, who played the much missed and departed Matthew Crawley, paid a visit to Today this morning, and addressed his decision to leave the show.

I spend a lot of my time apologizing,” Stevens said about his interactions with people on the street. “[It happens] almost every day.”

“It was a tough decision,” Stevens continued of his choice to depart. “But like a lot of tough decisions, they’re kind of exciting to make at the same time. But I’m thrilled to be here and it’s been quite a year since we left.”

"I suppose it was a surprise," he said. "It's a testament to how much people love the show, how much people love the character. In a way it was nice, but it has upset a lot of people, so I'm sorry."

Dan watched the season 4 premiere of the show and said that it was quite and odd experience. "It was really wonderful to see everyone again," he said. "It was very emotional, very weird watching people dealing with my own death. It was strange."

He was on the show to promote his Video-On-Demand movie Summer in February.
