What is the Fate of ‘Downton Abbey?’
The great thing about British series is that they don’t carry on past their expiration date. Unfortunately, Downton Abbey is so popular overseas that it will most likely continue until Master George reopens Downton as a haunted mansion.
Executive producer Gareth Neame told the Association Foreign Press that Downton would not end after season five, despite Julian Fellowes’ recent interview with the Wall Street Journal.
“I can confirm there are no plans to end the show after the fifth series,” Neame said, adding that ITV orders a new season on a “year-by-year basis.”
In a December 31st interview, Fellowes stated “the show would not go on forever (inevitable, of course), and something both he and I have been on the record for previously,” Neame clarified.
“For now ITV have commissioned series five and that is what we are busy preparing.”
Back in September, Fellowes told Celebuzz that while he didn’t see season four as its last, the Crawleys’ saga will come to an end at some point.
“I don’t think it will go on forever in the American way (where a series goes through 12 seasons, for example).”
Downton Abbey airs Sunday on PBS.
