Macklemore Texts Kendrick Lamar After Grammy Win: Sorry I "Robbed" You of Your Award
After the world ignited in collective outrage at Macklemore & Ryan Lewis winning the Best Rap Album award -- and basically stealing Kendrick Lamar's thunder -- at this year's Grammys, one-half of the Seattle-based hip-hop duo took to his Instagram to express his shock at his victory, agreeing with diehard K-Dot fans that it was not his award to take.
In a screenshot of a text he sent to Lamar, Macklemore apologized to the rapper, telling him that he should have won for his album, Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City instead of his.
Macklemore, who won three other awards Sunday night including Best New Artist, Best Rap and Best Performance for "Thrift Shop," captioned the photo:
My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album... I'm honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that's taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it's proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You're the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That's what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammysLamar, who was nominated in seven categories, went home empty-handed. So really, what is the bigger "heist" here?
