Miranda Cosgrove went under the sea for her latest photo shoot, sharing the camera with a group of very impressive dolphins she hopes to protect from the dangers of offshore drilling.
The 20-year-old Despicable Me 2 and iCarly star jetted down to the warm waters of the Bahamas on Friday, raising awareness for the need to protect marine life from the threat of seismic airgun blasts in the Atlantic Ocean.
Apparently, the blasts are used as a form of oil and gas exploration, which often comes as a precursor to offshore drilling. The efforts are similar to lighting sticks of dynamite and dropping them into the water.
Just last week, the American government released a proposal that, if passed, would open up a California-sized area of the ocean to the explosive tests.
Along with the photos, which are all available in the gallery above, Miranda filmed a public service announcement with the Oceana Group. The people behind the video are hoping to lobby the U.S. government to take action against the exploratory blasts, which they claim are extremely harmful to marine life.
“Swimming with wild dolphins made it so clear that these intelligent and social animals need their use of sound to survive, and I’m so happy to be working with Oceana to protect them,” said Cosgrove.
“When I first entered the water, the dolphins were playing with each other, swimming side by side, and they were constantly singing to each other – I could hear it!’ added the actress. “After a while they started to approach me and I could feel them look me in the eye. It was one of the best experiences of my life.”
