Beyoncé Isn't the Only Badass in the Knowles Family
Solange Knowles Opens Up About Life After Divorce and Future Career Goals
Beyoncé's ever-fabulous life overshadows pretty much any other person's on the planet... I can't even imagine following in her footsteps as her younger sister.
After having a baby, getting married and then divorced all before age 21, Solange knows a thing or two about life and has found her own distinct desires, passions and goals for herself through those experiences.
"Everyone talks about how, in your 30s, all of these growing pains transition into wisdom and you feel more self-assured and confident. But I think I had a bit of a jump-start on that at 27," she admitted in an interview with Harpers Bazaar.
"In a lot of ways, emotionally and mentally, I feel far older than 27," she said. "Just going through a marriage and a divorce—which I essentially did by 21—will give you an insane amount of perspective on life."
And that perspective has entirely transformed her life--separate from that of her sister's. Though she admits (contrary to popular belief) her parents never wanted her to be an artist and tried talking her into living a "normal, teenage life," she hopped into the music industry and began performing at age 13, including several shows with Destiny's Child. These days, though, she doesn't just hop into things.
"For the first time in my life, I'm basing every decision around the idea of whether I want to do it or if I think it will be inspiring. And that's paid off for me."
Indeed it has! Not only has Solange maintained her music career, she's also started a record label and was named the Creative Director of Puma--all before hitting her 30s.
As for her love life, the fashionista says, "Luckily, I dated all of the losers ages ago. My love life has been stable for a while. It's a f*cked up thing--without conflict it's a lot harder to write interesting songs."
And although she definitely knows a little bit about conflict, she's finally found balance in her long-lasting relationship with Alan Ferguson, a successful video director.
All in all, Solange proves just how talented and motivated she is without relying on the success of her older sister. She's definitely her own person with a lot to bring to this world, and I'm really into it!
