Perhaps the most surprising development in the story of James Franco's ill-fated online romance with a 17-year-old girl came Friday morning when he admitted to it on Live with Kelly and Michael. For those unfamiliar, here's a quick refresher: Franco met the girl after a performance of Of Mice and Men when he asked her to tag him in a video on Instagram. After she did, they began to talk which ended with Franco asking the girl if he should get them a hotel room to hook up.

You can read their full conversation here.

During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Michael Friday morning, Franco copped to the text messages. "I’m embarrassed. I guess I’m just a model about how social media is tricky," he admit. "It’s a way people meet each other today, but what I’ve learned is you don’t know who’s on the other end. I used bad judgment and I learned my lesson."

Franco then went on to bemoan the evils of life in the public eye: "Unfortunately in my position, not only do I have to go through the embarrassing rituals of meeting someone, but if I do that, then it gets published for the world so it’s doubly embarrassing."

However, Franco should have known better already. He's written articles in the New York Times about social media and the nature of celebrity.

For the optimists out there, there is one piece of good news in all this, which is that Franco's admission and apology means the whole thing wasn't just viral marketing for Franco's new movie, in which his character seduces a 14 year old. So at least some things aren't a hoax.
