Anyone who pays attention to pop culture even peripherally knows that Miley Cyrus has had a wild year. If nothing else, Miley certainly knows how to get attention and how to sell magazines, which explains why she’s been featured on the covers of Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Rolling Stone, W and Love in the past year, to name a few. With the official unveiling today of Miley’s Elle magazine cover, we took the opportunity to rank the past year in Miley’s magazine covers.
6. W Magazine
Miley Cyrus’ bleach-blonde eyebrows are not the only crime committed by W in putting her on their March 2014 cover. They also commissioned media wunderkind Ronan Farrow to write the accompanying cover story. What came out was a cloying, selfish piece in which Miley Cyrus takes a backseat to what Ronan Farrow thinks about Miley Cyrus. Plus the whole “bad girl naked in bed” thing seems a little stale.
The just-released May 2014 cover of Elle features Miley Cyrus in a sequined ensemble by Marc Jacobs with posture that would make Jack Donaghy cry. There’s nothing particularly wrong with it, but there’s also nothing exactly right with it either.
Miley’s March 2013 Cosmo cover was her first with her new blonde pixie cut. Sure the jacket-and-no-shirt thing seemed shocking then, but if only we’d known what she had in store for the rest of 2013.
3. Harper’s Bazaar
Harper’s Bazaar isn’t exactly known for pushing the envelope (then again they did stick a naked and pregnant Britney Spearson their cover once), but Miley’s October 2013 cover is a nice mix of the Harper’s and Miley brands. Plus she wears the hell out of that Burberry dress.
2. Love Magazine
There are about a dozen things to love about this cover. First, Miley’s pink mohawk is something we don’t see everyday. And her simple, stripped down look works well for this cover. But the use of an already existing LOVE tattoo makes this one of the better covers of 2014 so far.
1. Rolling Stone
The cover of Rolling Stone is a hallowed space for musicians, but it’s still a rock magazine. This cover is everything we’ve come to love about Miley Cyrus: it’s showy, it’s fun and it’s rock ‘n’ roll.
