Amanda Bynes Addresses Mental Health for the First Time
After a year of controversy and forced hospitalization for erratic behavior, Amanda Bynes is finally addressing rumors surrounding her mental health state.
While many sources have reported the contrary, the Hairspray star has never been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
She asked her lawyer to speak out on her behalf:
"There has been much speculation about Amanda's medical condition," her attorney Tamar Arminak tells People Magazine. "She has remained silent because she believed it was best to keep her mental health diagnosis private."
"However, she asked me to dispel certain rumors," Arminak continues. "For the record, Amanda does not have schizophrenia, nor has she ever been diagnosed with it."
The lawyer went on to note that the 28-year-old actress has never had a history of alcohol or drug abuse and has been marijuana-free for 9 months. Arminak also mentions Bynes is currently on no medications.
An anonymous source told People the star is seeking outpatient therapy several times a week to work through the causes of her past behavior.
While studying at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Orange County and still living under her mother's legal control, Amanda has slowly been getting her life back on track. Just last week she enjoyed a relaxing weekend with her parents, Rick and Lynn Bynes, in Los Cabos, Mexico to celebrate spring break and her 28th birthday.
"Her family is closely involved in her day-to-day life but they try to give her as much autonmy as possible," Arminak explains. "She's doing extremely well. Her primary focus is bonding with her family and being a student."
