Some eight months after expressing interest in playing his dream superhero, Channing Tatum has officially been hired to take on the role of Gambit in future X-Men movies.
The news was announced by X-Men: Days of Future Past producer Lauren Shuler Donner at the film’s London premiere this week.
“It is Channing, yes,” she told Total Film.
“He’s a rogue, Channing. He’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. And he can handle the action, we all know that. He’s got a really good heart. I know him personally. I did a movie with him. I think he’ll be great for Gambit,” Donner added.
While promoting White House Down last year, Tatum, 34, told Total Film about his desire to play the mutant hero.
“Gambit’s my favorite. I’m from New Orleans, around that area. I would like to do a Cajun accent,” the Jupiter Ascending star said at the time.
“I’ve always lived in and around the Cajun people . . . Gambit was always the women-loving, cigarette smoking, drinking . . . he was the punk rock of all the superheroes.”
Gambit was most recently portrayed by Friday Night Lights hunk Taylor Kitsch in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
X-Men: Days of Future Past opens nationwide May 23rd.
