Remember when Ryan Gosling pulled a disappearing act and went to work behind the camera?

Here’s your first look at that work.

Yes, Gosling is in Cannes for a reason. Lost River (formerly How to Catch a Monster) is his directorial debut, and it’s competing at the film festival’s Un Certain Regard section this week.

The trailer, shared early Monday morning by the folks at Indiewire, sheds little light on the storyline, which is apparently packed with fantasy and neo-noir goodness.

An early press release of the film promises a modern day fairytale set in a vanishing city. A single mother finds herself in a dark underworld while her teenage son runs into his own problems.

Gosling, who wrote the screenplay, hired the talents of Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Matt Smith and Gosling's ladylove Eva Mendes for the project.
