It was only a matter of time before James Franco realized he needed to beef up his already lengthy resume.

Enter: the theater. As in, the other side of the theater.

The New York Times reported over the weekend that Franco will make his theatrical directorial debut at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in New York City later this summer.

The 36-year-old will sit in the director’s chair for the premiere Robert Boswell’s The Long Shrift, a play about a fresh-from-jail convict who was accused of rape as a teen.

Franco’s project is part of the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater’s 20th anniversary season.

The sleepless actor can currently be seen in the Broadway production of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, opposite Chris O’Dowd and Leighton Meester. Franco has also been busy filming the crime-thriller The Adderall Diaries with Amber Heard in New York City.
