Chelsea Handler's Headed to Netflix
After much speculation, Chelsea Handler has officially announced that she's bringing her talents to Netflix. Once Chelsea Lately wraps up on E! in August, Handler will head over to Netflix for a deal that includes the streaming service's first-ever talk show, a stand-up special and docu-comedy specials.
Handler's talk show, as-yet untitled, will begin in early 2016. The stand-up special, based on her Uganda Be Kidding Me Live tour, will be released on October 16. If someone could please tell me what the hell a docu-comedy special is, I would very much appreciate it.
"If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested," Handler said in a statement. "I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move. I'm more excited than I’ve been in awhile, and the team at Netflix is the most forward thinking, alert group I've sat down with in ages. No offense to the Shahs Of Sunset."
According to Netflix, Handler's talk show will be very much similar to Chelsea Lately, with Handler providing her "unfiltered opinions on topical entertainment and cultural issues" and guest interviews. Apparently her docu-comedy specials will be about her "efforts to gain a better understanding on a variety of subjects ranging from NASCAR to politics and from Silicon Valley to the NBA draft." Okay sure.
If you're in Chicago, you can attend the taping of Handler's first Netflix stand-up special on June 20 at the Harris Theater.
