Celebuzz Gets an Inside Look at Disney’s Newest Show ‘Girl Meets World’ and Finds Out Why ‘Boy Meets World’ Fans Should Stick with the Spin-Off
There’s always that one TV show everyone relates back to as the one that they “grew up with.”
The show that would go on to be deemed the epitome of your “childhood”, the one that you never wanted to come to an end and the one that you’d be satisfied with if it went on forever.
But what if that particular show could continue its story? What if your favorite series from your days of adolescence got a spin-off?
If you grew up in the 90s it’s pretty much impossible to not remember the Disney TV show classic Boy Meets World. A sweet, coming-of-age comedy about Cory Matthews and his close friends going through the motions of school, teen-angst, first loves, family problems and ultimately growing up.
Flash-forward 14 years later and this deeply loved show now has a new spin off with Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel returning to reprise their roles as the adult Cory and Topanga, who are married with two children living in New York City.Rowan Blanchard) also faces life lessons through her family, friends, and school, just as her parents did when they were her age.
While this is CLEARLY an exciting time for Boy Meets World fans everywhere, for the star of the show, Rowan Blanchard, being cast as the lead role in the most highly anticipated Disney series to come around in years couldn’t have been any more perfect.
“Originally I was supposed to be auditioning for Sabrina’s role, Maya, and we swapped somewhere in the middle of the audition process, I don’t know how we did that but we did. And you know, when I first saw the script I knew it was something that I was drawn to but then I read the names Cory and Topanga and I was like, ‘WAIT. CORY AND TOPANGA?!’ And that was it. I was just like ‘okay!’ I knew it was something that I needed to be apart of” Rowan said.
Similar feelings about the way in which things fell into place on the show come from Sabrina Carpenter, who plays Riley’s best friend on the show, Maya.
“It’s such a cool thing, how fate really does what is best for you, sometimes. I’m so lucky that I get to play Maya because she is such a natural part of me and its really fun to be able to get to play the trouble maker and to be able to be best friends with Rowan, on screen and off screen” said Carpenter.
Now, I know what you all are thinking. “These kids are so young! How could they possibly know anything about Boy Meets World?” But rest assured, even though these little stars may have been too young to keep up with the show while it was on air, it doesn’t mean that they didn’t catch up with us all later!
“I have all the seasons on DVD and, well, I don’t want to say I grew up with the characters because I will definitely get made fun of for saying that. But you know, I definitely caught all the reruns! When I was eight years old I was watching Full House and Sabrina the Teenage Witch in the mornings along with Boy Meets World so it’s definitely a show I love very much” said Sabrina.
In terms of what to expect? The show is going to be chalk full of fun from old references to guest stars (we’ve heard that Mr. Feeny is going to make an appearance).
Writer of the original show and now Girl Meets World, Michael Jacobs, says that, “the original audience will be very rewarded by the growth of these characters. The first season alone gets through things that seem like it would have taken 3 years to get to – so stick with it!”
If that isn’t enough incentive to tune into the show, then I don’t know what is.
Girl Meets World premieres Friday, June 27th at 9:45/8:45c on the Disney Channel (it can also be watched now by participating cable and satellite subscribers on the Watch Disney Channel app and website).
