Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder Reveal Their Secret to Being Friendly Exes
In the latest issue of Nylon magazine, the two spill the beans on how they’ve remained good friends after two years of dating.
“I don’t like any kind of negativity. I try to be good to everyone, whether it’s a love, a friend, an ex,” Dobrev says. “I’ll always try to treat people the way I want to be treated.”
As for Somerhalder? He says he’s still on good terms with his ex-girlfriend because “she always lets me have the last fry.”
The former couple, who made their romance public in September 2011 after meeting on the set of their CW series, called it quits in May 2012. Since then, the two have been open about supporting one another in all their endeavors.
But don’t confuse their friendliness for a romantic spark. According to Dobrev, there’s still more to the two of them as people than what their fans perceive.
“People feel like they know you when you’re in their living room, weekly, for five years. But I always get uncomfortable when people know more about me than I know about them,” she says, adding about living in the spotlight, “It doesn’t feel real because I don’t live in that world. When I go to those events, I’m in town specifically for that, and then I leave later that night. I’ve maybe stayed for the after-party once, ever. It still feels like I’m a fan, in a way. A lot of people are very cynical and very jaded, but I’m not there yet.”
