You may think it was a walk in the park for Kendall Jenner to hit it big in the modeling industry as a member of the Kardashian/Jenner Klan… But it was quite the opposite.

In fact, her famous family posed as a bit of an inconvenience in her desire to be taken seriously as a supermodel–who, with the exception of the best, typically go unnamed and anonymous on runways.

“People didn’t want to take a chance on me, I think because I was sort of known,” the 18-year-old explains during her cover shoot with TeenVogue.  “They were a little bit on the fence about it. Some people might think that what I’ve done before made it easier for me to get jobs, but it was actually a disadvantage. I had to work even harder.”

While she got a slow start in the industry at just 14-years-old, she decided to take a break for a few years just “to be a kid for a minute” (as she describes it) before really hitting it hard when she was 17.

“I was like, ‘All right, I’m going to start taking this seriously,'” she explains about the moment she decided to switch agencies and begin plotting her strategy toward success as a model, being very selective about potential jobs.  “I felt like I should pick specific designers that I wanted to go for so I could make a good first impression—or more like a fifth impression,” Kendall says, laughing. “But it’s my first impression on this world.”

And she’s definitely done a good job making that impression, becoming one of the top models in the high-fashion world today–to which she can include TeenVogue covergirl now, too!
