Britney Spears Caught Lip Syncing to Sia’s ‘Perfume’ Vocals

Katy Perry was also caught lip syncing late last year.
It is no secret that Britney Spears — and many other pop stars, for that matter — lip sync when performing live. Lip syncing is a necessary “evil,” because pop stars also have to dance, and the need for all mammals to, you know, breathe can make doing both at the same time incredibly difficult, especially over the span of two hours.

However, Spears, whose camp still (for reasons passing understanding) maintains that she sings live (with the help of a backing track), was caught taking the art of lip syncing to embarrassing new lows.

While in attendance at Spears’ Piece of Me show at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas over the weekend, a fan recorded a video of Britney performing “Perfume,” only — TWIST! — it’s Sia’s distinctive voice that rings out as Spears walks the stage, microphone in hand. (It’s hard to tell, but Spears’ voice may also be much lower in the mix.) Listen below:

Sia, of course, co-wrote the song for Spears’ Britney Jean album, and a partial version of the track featuring Sia’s vocals made its way online earlier this year. Sia has one of those “you know it when you hear it” voices, and so there should be little doubt that the clip of Spears “singing” predominately features Sia’s vocals, but for comparison and good measure:

Earlier this year, Spears faced criticism after a rough demo of “Alien” — from the same album — leaked. The leak featured Spears’ voice pre-autotune and was met with much derision. The producer of that song, William Orbit, rushed to Spears’ defense, as, surely, someone will rush to her defense in the wake of Sia-Gate. (Please don’t let “Sia-Gate” catch on.)

If a soundboard technician from the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas suddenly finds himself out of a job, he’ll be in good company.
