Miley Cyrus Doesn’t Want to Die a Popstar, Retires From Twerking

While I sort of loved the twerking, rebellious Miley Cyrus, it looks like the 21-year-old singer has hit a new personal era, realizing how much her extreme fame can impact the world… And now she wants to use it for good.

She made her first big move toward bettering the world at the Video Music Awards when she sent her date Jesse up on stage to accept her Video of the Year award to make a touching speech and raise awareness about homelessness.

But what exactly made her decide it was time to change?

“After my last performance at the VMAs, I didn’t realize my platform, I didn’t realize my power and I didn’t realize my voice and how loud it is,” she explained in an interview with the AP on Monday, following her special VMA moment with Jesse.

“And I thought, you know, rather than sit here and talk about, ‘Oh, on every news cover, every time you go to AOL or wherever you go everybody’s sitting there talking about me,’ instead of using it as a negative, how can I use it as a positive?”

So she turned to raising awareness in her charitable endeavor in youth homelessness, and it paid off way more than twerking on stage with Robin Thicke.

“This fills you up and it feels good for a long time,” says the star. “I feel incredible today. I feel like I have a jet strapped to me and I am ready to take off from this. I feel like there’s a way that I can incorporate everything I do in the future around youth homelessness… It just gives me more of a purpose.”

Not to mention, she adds: “I mean, dying a pop star is not what I want to have on my tombstone.”

However, outside of her philanthropic work, she still continues to better her music… And a part of that has been stepping away from her “twerking” persona.

“I’ve retired, yeah,” she told MTV hosts DJ Sway and Lucy Hale. “I’m making some music right now with the Flaming Lips. It’s different. It’s a little psychedelic, but still in that pop world,” the star explained.  “I’m making some music right now with the Flaming Lips. It’s different. She added, “It’s not about twerking. It’s about the music.”
