Sofia Vergara Blasts Those Who Call Emmy Pedestal Gag Sexist

Sofia Vergara Emmy Awards

Sofia Vergara was literally put on a pedestal at the 2014 Emmy Awards show as Bruce Rosenblum, president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, presented his annual speech.

As Vergara rotated on the platform, Rosenblum’s speech was timed just right. “The academy is much more diverse now that ever before, both in front of and behind the camera,” Rosenblum said as Vergara’s behind came into full view, prompting hoots and hollers from the audience.

Shortly after the speech, Twitter and the internet went wild with many women expressing their disappointment in the “bizarre, objectifying Emmy moment.” But backstage, Vergara argued that it was an empowering moment.

“I think its absolutely the opposite. It means that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself,” Vergara said.

She went on to day, “I think it’s ridiculous that somebody started this — I know who she was — who has no sense of humor (and should) lighten up a bit."
